Population

The Battle Creek Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 141,963 in 1970 to 136,146 in 2010. That was a decrease of 4.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,726 in 1970 to 5,380 in 2010. That was an increase of 97.4 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.9 percent to 4.0 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 6.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the principal factor adding population in all periods, nearly equalled by NIM in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the primary factor in population increase for the first two periods, replaced by NIM in the most recent period. The MSA had a net reduction in population in the last two periods.
